Milwaukee restaurant shot at after GOP candidate holds event there

Just days after hosting a political event, Lareños Restaurant in Milwaukee found itself the target of violence when someone shot at one of its windows, shattering the front door’s glass. Situated on the city’s south side, Lareños prides itself on its inclusive atmosphere, welcoming patrons from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation. Republican U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde recently held a roundtable discussion at the restaurant, highlighting its openness to diverse perspectives.

Jose Cabrera, whose brother owns the restaurant, emphasized their commitment to serving the community, including providing meals to the homeless. However, just six days after Hovde’s visit, the restaurant fell victim to vandalism, leaving the owners puzzled and concerned. While it remains unclear whether the shooting was a targeted attack or a random act of violence, the cost of repairs is estimated at $450, adding financial strain to the small business.

Expressing bewilderment at the incident, Cabrera noted that in the three years since Lareños opened, they had never encountered such troubles. The family-run establishment is left grappling with unanswered questions and a sense of unease. In response to the incident, the Hovde campaign offered to cover the cost of repairs, condemning the violence and calling for unity in the face of adversity.

This isn’t the first instance of political unrest in Milwaukee, as evidenced by graffiti reported at the Wisconsin Republican Party’s location in 2020. Such incidents highlight the need for solidarity and mutual respect in both political discourse and community interactions, underscoring the importance of safeguarding small businesses from senseless acts of violence.
