The season is done prematurely for Braves‘ right-hander Michael Soroka, with forearm inflammation meaning he won’t be part of Atlanta’s postseason run.
The good news, according to manager Brian Snitker, is that he won’t need surgery. He said that hours after the team put Soroka on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.
“It’s not anything he’s going to have time to come back from,” Snitker said. “He’ll be shut down, and then he can kind of concentrate, when he gets ready, on his offseason program.”
The Braves recalled Soroka on Tuesday from Triple-A Gwinnett to start against the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched three innings and gave up five runs on four hits and a walk and struck out six before departing the game with numbness in his fingers.
Soroka finishes the season with a 2-2 record and 6.40 ERA in seven appearances (six starts). Now 26, Soroka was a first-round pick (28th overall) by Atlanta in 2015.
His roller-coaster career includes a pair of Achilles injuries, and he spent all of 2021 and 2022 sidelined.
Soroka appeared to be a big part of the Braves‘ future when he started 29 games in 2019, going 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA. He finished second in Rookie of the Year balloting following that season.
At Gwinnett this season, Soroka was 4-4 with a 3.41 ERA over 17 starts, striking out 92 batters in 87 innings.
